Chatsworth's Early Years Programme draws from the first of three programmes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) education - Primary Years Programme (PYP). It is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3-12 years. The Early Years component is for children in their preschool years, typically from 3-6 years old (K1 to Year 2).

Here at Chatsworth, we implement an inquiry-led and play-based Early Years programme that is centered around authentic inquiry and engaging students in their own learning both inside and outside of the regular classroom.

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides the foundation for our international curriculum, incorporating skills, attitudes, units of inquiry, concepts and the Learner Profile. With a transdisciplinary approach to learning, all of our subject areas are linked wherever these links can be made authentically, ensuring that the foundation skills in areas such as Language and Mathematics are maintained.

In addition to lessons within the regular classroom and outside learning environments, students in the Early Years will visit with Single Subject teachers (also referred to as Specialists) in the following curriculum areas:

  • Physical Education (PE) takes place twice per week
  • Visit the Library each week where they will continue to develop their literacy skills, in addition to their ICT and media skills (related to Literacy). Students will exchange and bring home one to two books per week from the Library
  • Explore art in a Reggio inspired atelier model.  In the art studio, the focus is about listening, being patient and caring about children and what they have to offer. The students come to create, explore and express themselves through art
  • Attend one Music lesson per week in K1-K2 and two Music lessons in Y1- 2
  • Attend play-based Mandarin lessons twice per week. Mandarin lessons at this age focus on songs and games to expose the children to the language and focus on tones and basic vocabulary and character recognition

Every year, students from K1 to Y6 inquire their way through various Units of Inquiry which culminate in a mid-year concert of melodious singing, upbeat dance moves and stories.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) and External Curricular Activities (ECA) are integral to an enriching school life and are led by the teachers and external providers respectively. K1 and K2 children will be able to join some of the ECAs on campus. These include Little League Soccer, Rhythmic Gymnastics Foundations I (girls only) and My Little French Theatre (French Mother Tongue). From Year 1 onwards, students will be able to select from a wide variety of CCAs to participate.
