IB MYP Language Pathways
Chatsworth International School is an IB World School. The IB requires all students to study two languages. One language from Group 1 and one language from Group 2. It is not recommended students study three languages. There are exceptions where a students can study two languages from Group 1. However it is not permitted for a student to study two languages from Group 2.
English - a taught subject, designed for those who have native and near native levels, requires fluency in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
Japanese - a taught subject, designed for those who have native and near native levels, requires fluency in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
Mother Tongue - supported with an external MT tutor, fees apply (approx. $60SGD/hour), lessons are conducted off campus, tutors are fully trained in IBMYP concepts and assessment, designed for those who have native and near native levels, requires fluency in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
English - a taught subject, designed for students scoring up to B2 on the Oxford Placement Test (OPT).
French - a taught subject, designed for students taking English Language & Literature. This is an introductory course to the language and the culture.
Mandarin - a taught subject, designed for students taking English Language & Literature. This is an introductory course to the language and the culture.
The IB Middle Years Programme Language and Literature Mother Tongue is offered in Year 7 to Year 11. The programme develops literacy skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in the target language. It assumes first language competency in the mother tongue language. External mother tongue tutors support the programme and are paid for by the parents. They work closely with the Mother Tongue Coordinator.
Students are timetabled to meet twice per week with the Mother Tongue Coordinator on campus and once per week off campus with their Mother Tongue Tutor. The course follows IBMYP Language and Literature curriculum and assessment. Students will study and respond to literature in their mother tongue.
IB Diploma Programme School Supported Self-taught Literature is offered in Year 12 and Year 13. The two year course focuses on literature and is only offered at a Standard Level. Students focus on the analysis of literature written in their mother tongue. All assessment, both internal and external is completed in the target language and assessed externally.
There is the opportunity for a bilingual diploma. This programme is also supported by mother tongue tutors paid for by parents. In school, support from the Mother Tongue Coordinator is timetabled for students.
